# Did Jesus Have Grandparents?

> While Jesus was miraculously conceived by the Holy Spirit, He had grandparents through both Mary and Joseph—biological grandparents through Mary and legal grandparents through Joseph.

Jesus’ mother was a virgin; while she was engaged to Joseph, “before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit” (Matt. 1:18). During the time of the betrothal, Joseph kept her a virgin until after the birth of Jesus. Neither Joseph nor any other man contributed to the miraculous conception.

Legally, however, Joseph was Jesus’ father since he named Him (Matt. 1:21–25). Thus, Joseph’s parents would have been considered Jesus’ grandparents, and they would have had a legal connection to Him. Mary was the biological mother of Jesus, and so her parents would have also been His grandparents with a flesh-and-blood relationship to Him.
