Engagement is an exciting time of life as a couple prepares for marriage and their future lives together. Marriage is a lifelong commitment that is taken seriously and is a reflection of Christ’s love for the church. This exciting time is not only a time of practical preparation, but is also a direct and unique reminder to us of how we should be prepared for Christ's return when He will unite with His bride the church.

## What Does the Bible Say to Engaged Couples?

### Old Testament

**Genesis 2:24 **Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Proverbs 18:22  
He who finds a wife finds a good thing  
and obtains favor from the LORD.

Proverbs 19:14  
House and wealth are inherited from fathers,  
but a prudent wife is from the LORD.

Proverbs 31:10  
An excellent wife who can find?  
She is far more precious than jewels.

Song of Solomon 8:7  
Many waters cannot quench love,  
neither can floods drown it.  
If a man offered for love  
all the wealth of his house,  
he would be utterly despised.

Isaiah 62:5  
For as a young man marries a young woman,  
so shall your sons marry you,  
and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride,  
so shall your God rejoice over you.  

### New Testament

  
**1 Corinthians 13:4–7**  
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

2 Corinthians 6:14  
Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness
