Consider these practical, tried-and-true, mom-friendly ways to feast on God’s Word. Which one works for you in this season of life?

1. Begin with a verse you know. Meditate on it by repeating it thoughtfully, emphasizing a different word each time. For example:

He will . . . gently lead those that are with young.”

“He will . . . gently lead those that are with young.”

“He will . . . gently lead those that are with young.”

“He will . . . gently lead those that are with young.”

2. Use a verse to shape your prayers. For example, “Thank You, Jesus, that You will gently lead me today. Give me grace to follow You.”

3. Ask the Holy Spirit to bring a certain Scripture to mind when you need it most. For example, lately, I rely on Him to remind me, “Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!” (Ps. 100:2). The Holy Spirit nourishes me with this encouragement as I serve my children.

4. Ask a woman who loves God’s Word to teach you how to study Scripture or to read through portions of Scripture with you. Be honest about the amount of time and energy you can devote to the study.

5. Pursue at least one friendship with a woman who knows and lives by God’s Word. Ask her to send you snippets of what she is learning. One of my closest friends often sends a verse to me, taken right out of her own morning devotions. She turns my eyes to Jesus before I launch into a busy day of life-with-littles. It would also be wonderful to be a friend like this for someone else.

6. Learn alongside your child. Even though I studied the Bible before motherhood, I never understood the big picture of Scripture until I read The Jesus Storybook Bible by Sally Lloyd-Jones with my five-year-old. What a life-changing experience! Keep your heart warm to the Bible verses you are sharing with your child. They are for you too.

7. Place an open Bible in a location where you spend a lot of time and read it through the day for nearness to Christ.

8. Subscribe to receive a Verse of the Day in a format that you are likely to see, read, and meditate upon.

9. Listen to songs with Scripture-based lyrics. I play Seeds Family Worship, Songs for Saplings, and other Scripture songs for my children, and the Lord uses them to nourish me too.

10. Write a verse on an index card and read it through the day.

11. Choose Scripture-rich artwork for your home. Get in the habit of pausing to read it and take it in. Point it out to your child and read it together often.

12. Get in a good, solid church. If you miss the pastor’s sermon on Sunday, listen to an audio recording during the week or watch the service online if that’s an option. This will benefit you in two ways: you’ll be nourished by the Word, and you’ll stay connected with your church family.

13. Whenever a season of motherhood allows, do join a Bible study with other people.

14. Whenever a season of motherhood allows, do wake up early to read God’s Word and pray.

15. Whenever a season of motherhood demands everything you’ve got, do remember this:

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.—Romans 8:38–39 NIV
