3 Ways God’s Power Is on Display

God demonstrates His mighty power all around us through His creation. The Scriptures, especially Genesis 1–2 and the Psalms, tell us that at His command the universe and all of His creation came into being. Psalm 33 summarizes well His mighty work of creation: “By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of His mouth all their host. . . . He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast” (vv. 6, 9).

His Power In Creation

By His words He effortlessly created a universe so vast that at the speed of light—186,000 miles per second—it would take about one hundred thousand years to travel across our galaxy, the Milky Way Galaxy, which contains some 200 billion stars and other celestial objects. When you think that our galaxy is only one of billions of galaxies, you can begin to grasp the vastness of the universe that God created by His word.

The only correct response to our omnipotent God’s work in creation is one of gratitude.

In fact, His creation is a continual testimony of His “eternal power” (Romans 1:20). The only correct response to our omnipotent God’s work in creation is one of gratitude (cf. Romans 1:21) and worship. Indeed, one day in heaven followers will bow down and exclaim, “Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created” (Revelation 4:11).

His Power in Providence

This omnipotence is not only seen in His creation but also in the sustaining and directing of it by His providence. In Christ “all things hold together” (Colossians 1:17) as He “upholds all things by the word of His power” (Hebrews 1:3). This involves His sustaining not only this vast universe but even each of our mental capacities, and circulatory, respiratory, and nervous systems, as He accomplishes His wise and loving purposes.

His Power in Salvation

God’s omnipotence appears also in His plan of salvation. As we noted, God brought the Messiah into the world through a miraculous virgin birth. In response to God’s promise, Mary praised the “Mighty One” (Luke 1:49) and acknowledged His past mighty deeds (Luke 1:51). In Christ’s life He displayed the power of God as Jesus miraculously provided food for the hungry multitudes, walked on water, stilled a storm, healed the sick, and raised the dead.

The standard of God’s power is seen in the raising of Christ from the dead as evident from the empty tomb. It is this same power that can transform His followers from arrogant people into humble ones, from sinful individuals into genuinely spiritual people, and from warped thinkers into those knowing the wisdom of God.

Because of the greatness of God’s power, one day all His enemies will bow the knee to Him (Philippians 2:10–11; Psalm 66:3). When He comes again to judge the world and set up His kingdom, it will be with great power (Matthew 24:30). Those who know His power and have seen it will praise His judgments and salvation (see Revelation 19:1–3).
