Jesus’ response to the rich young ruler came in the form of a question: “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone” (Mark 10:18).

If goodness is unique to God, in what ways does God display goodness? Here are four ways God alone is good:

  1. Only God is infinitely good—His goodness will never be exhausted.
  2. Only God is perfectly good—He could never be better.
  3. Only God is immutably good—His goodness will not change.
  4. Only God is the source of all goodness—Barnabas is described as a good man (Acts 11:24), but his goodness is a gift of God because in our depraved state there is “none who does good” (Romans 3:12).
