Losing a spouse is one of the most tragic losses one can experience. God promises comfort to those who mourn and that he hears those who cry out to Him in their despair. Death and separation are a result of the fall, and in the new creation we can look forward to seeing those who have passed away in the Lord and know that death and suffering will not be a part of life with Him.

What Does the Bible Say to Comfort Widows and Widowers?

Old Testament

Exodus 22:22–23
You shall not mistreat any widow or fatherless child. If you do mistreat them, and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry,

Deuteronomy 10:18
He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing.

Psalm 23:4
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.

Psalm 34:18
The LORD is near to the brokenhearted
and saves the crushed in spirit.

Psalm 68:5
Father of the fatherless and protector of widows
is God in his holy habitation.

Psalm 119:50
This is my comfort in my affliction,
that your promise gives me life.

Psalm 147:3
He heals the brokenhearted
and binds up their wounds.

Proverbs 15:25
The LORD tears down the house of the proud
but maintains the widow’s boundaries.

New Testament

Matthew 5:4
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”

2 Corinthians 1:3–5
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too.

1 Thessalonians 4:14
For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.

Revelation 21:4
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
