Freedom can be a controversial subject among Christians. To be free from oppression is obviously important, as all Christians would agree. But the matter of “spiritual freedoms” can be a bit more murky. Certain Christians lean more into freedom and liberty while others follow a more strict pattern of living to avoid falling into sin. The Bible has a lot to say about freedom. Let’s look at some verses.

What Does the Bible Say About Freedom?

Old Testament

Psalm 34:19
Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
but the Lord delivers him out of them all.

Psalm 68:6
God settles the solitary in a home;
he leads out the prisoners to prosperity,
but the rebellious dwell in a parched land.

Psalm 79:9
Help us, O God of our salvation,
for the glory of your name;

for your name’s sake!

for I have sought your precepts.

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
because the Lord has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;
he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.
